Kacey Musgraves Shares Video For John Prine-Inspired Song, “Cardinal”

Kacey Musgraves just released a new music video for “Cardinal,” one of the standout tracks on her No. 1 Top Country Album, Deeper Well. The video, which was directed by Scott Cudmore, is an “abstract and kaleidoscopic trip through birth, rebirth, nature, memory, dream, and the fragmented pieces of ourselves that eventually transform into different energy when we leave this world behind,” according to a press release. “Cardinal” is a song that Musgraves admits is inspired by her personal relationship with John Prine, who died in 2020.

“When cardinals appear, angels are near,” Musgraves wrote in a zine that accompanied a special edition of Deeper Well. “Unexplainable things started happening and cardinals started showing up on my doorstep soon after my good friend and mentor passed, John Prine. He always had a big connection to cardinals and felt that they were messengers from the spirit realm. He inspired this song, no doubt.” Musgraves’ Deeper Well World Tour rolls through North America beginning in early September. (People)
